Best Seats In The Ryman – My co-worker ended up going to a work conference with me in Nashville. Brady knows more about country music than I do and has been able to visit the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry, for thirty years.
My daughter and I stopped outside the Ryman on our whirlwind tour. I took some photos, but I asked Brady to write about his experiences visiting the places to help other travelers know what to expect if they are on the “must see” list and Ryman on their Nashville tour.

If you’re visiting Nashville, a visit to the Ryman House is definitely worth it, especially if you’re a country music fan. It was the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974 and is known as the “Mother Church of Country Music.” Country legends like Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash have headlined the Ryman’s old stage.

When I first approached the building, I thought I was in the wrong place because it looked more like a church than a theater. I later learned that it was originally a church called the Union Gospel Tabernacle, built by a local businessman, Thomas Ryman, in 1892. It was renamed the Ryman Auditorium after his death in 1904. First used for Sunday services and more. Concerts and events during the week. It eventually turned into a full concert venue.
After the Opry left the Ryman House in 1974, it moved to its current home at the Grand Old Opry House, about 20 minutes from downtown Nashville. But there are still plenty of Opry and other shows at the Ryman. I’ve never seen a show there, but I can only imagine that it’s a special experience because the Theater is small, only 2,000 seats, and the stage is very crowded and intimate.
Despite its country music connection, everyone from actors to U.S. presidents to ballroom dancers have kept the Ryman’s music venue entertained for years. I’ve seen concert posters for Louis Armstrong, Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr.
There is a little history to this unique building. I did the tour myself, but you can pay extra for a backstage tour recommended to go back to the dressing room. Self-guided tours are always free.
Visiting Ryman Auditorium: History And Venue Info Guide
The tour started with a weird and wonderful video that talks about the house. After watching the video, you can walk around the theater to see various past performances and take photos on stage.
I went alone so I had time to read all the exhibits. I love history and music so it was really interesting to me. I’m not sure my kids would be interested, but they might enjoy seeing the costumes. Special items and other historical memorabilia are on display.
While there, you can get involved in professional recording and songwriting. You can write music or original compositions. The 15-minute session is first-come, first-served, so you’ll want to line up when you arrive. You must pay $15 to register. I chose not to, but it was kind of fun, and I wish I had put Willie Nelson on the head and said “Mom, don’t let your baby grow up to be a cowboy.”
While in Nashville, visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum, Patsy Cline, and enjoy some fried okra while listening to live music at the NashHouse Southern Spoon and Saloon.

But Kolob Canyon is not as famous as the Scenic Drive of Zion National Park. He is not famous for going as…
