The James Beard Award-winning chef, who continues to expand his footprint in New Jersey, has officially brought his signature style of soul food to the rooftop space along the Hudson River.

Last week, EnVue Hotel announced the acquisition of the outdoor dining facility by Marcus Samuelsson. The 15,000-square-foot restaurant, located on the sixth floor of the building, opened last year after the completion of the Mack-Cali and Roseland buildings.

Samuelsson is, among other things, an acclaimed chef, cookbook author and TV presenter. Harlem’s most iconic Red Rooster put him on the map, and his latest venture, Weehawken, seems to be the perfect place to eat and drink amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now more than ever, you need to be able to eat a good meal outside in a good place with an amazing view, so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity,” says Samuelsson. “Our team is very excited to cook the best summer produce from our favorite farms and suppliers and serve our customers in a beautiful place where they can hopefully relax during this challenging time.

Samuelsson has become quite familiar with the Garden State in recent years. Marcus B&P opened in Newark Hahne & Co. formed in 2017 and spent much of this year partnering with the non-profit World Central Kitchen to help deliver free daily meals to Newark residents with 100,000 meals a day.

His latest Jersey venture, Marcus on the NoHu Rooftop, is a seasonal pop-up menu. Appetizers range from the famous M’s Cornbread with Peach Jam and Honey Butter to Crispy ‘Bird Dogs’. Mains include steak, grilled salmon with bok choy, scallops and miso broth, and starter tani with glazed mushrooms, eggplant and pickled cauliflower rice.

The restaurant offers several options for a seafood tower and two sharing plates. The first, called Bird Royale, has whole fried chicken, grilled corn and mac ‘n cheese with crackers, while the second has whole fried branzino with pickled onions and garlic rice.

Cocktails at the restaurant include the Brownstoner, which consists of nutmeg-infused bourbon, Cherry Heering and St. Germaine. A Bourbon Street concoction of Irish whiskey, New Orleans-style cold brew, oranges and almonds. Local beer from Hoboken Brewing Company and a variety of wines complete the drink.

Marcus at NoHu Rooftop opens at 3. Monday to Friday and closes at 1:00 and 17:00 on weekends. Sunday to Thursday. The rooftop brunch restaurant will be served Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, featuring Samuelsson’s famous fried chicken and corn waffles with warm honey and pickles. Nohu Rooftop In Weehawken Named Best For Outdoor Dining

That’s how award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson, the chef behind Harlem’s Red Rooster and Newark’s MarcusB&P, described his feelings when he first saw the rooftop restaurant and bar atop the EnVuein Weehawken year-old waterfront hotel.

“It’s just an amazing backdrop,” he said of the breathtaking view of the New York skyline that the 12,000-square-foot space offers. “You feel elevated, like you are above it all.”

The new bar and restaurant, called Marcus at NoHu Rooftops, is six stories above the Hudson River in Port Imperial, a Weehawken-based community center that offers local bus and rail service, as well as ferries to Manhattan. The restaurant opened in mid-August with a New American menu with a strong focus on seafood.

The menu includes seafood tower, seafood jambalaya, and a plate with grilled shrimp and salmon tartare or lobster, shrimp, oysters, crab and scallops. However, he assures that his favorite fried chicken and cornbread are not missing from his menu. “We definitely offer that,” he said.

Samuelsson said he’s glad his employees, most of whom can’t work because their restaurants are closed (Red Rooster recently opened for outdoor dining; Marcus B&P is temporarily closed), are now at work.

“This year is a new opportunity for my staff,” he said. “It’s been a rough year.” Marcus has about 80 employees in NoHu.

“It’s not about wrapping them up,” he said. “Security is an important thing. We practice social distancing. When you walk in, you see a lot of space, it’s air.”
