The Best Guatemala Family Resorts
Our room was absolutely beautiful and waking up to the volcanoes from our balcony was absolutely magical. We really enjoyed the little sustainable touches like the locally made bathrobe and eco-friendly toiletries.
We had dinner at the on-site restaurant during our stay and it was absolutely delicious. Both are mostly vegetarian and we really liked the meatless menu.
Although it was a bit chilly when we visited, we took full advantage of the beautiful infinity pool. It was such a surreal experience to swim in the pool and enjoy the panoramic view of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
So will we be back? 100% simultaneously. Laguna Lodge is the perfect combination of nature, sustainability and luxury. It was a very relaxing stay and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

While living as a nomad on Lake Atitlan, we often “booked and craved” the hotels we passed as we traveled from town to town by boat. Some of them were clearly visible from the water, while others were hidden among the shade trees and tropical flora.
In this guide, I will guide you on where to stay with detailed information about the hotel, services and city.
Whether you’re looking for the best affordable hostels, beautiful boutique hotels, or 5-star luxury resorts, below are our top picks on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.

Lake Atitlan is much larger than you might expect, and the boat trip to the towns around the lake can quickly become tiresome. For example, from Panajachel to San Pedro, it stops at 5-6 ports/cities to pick up/drop off passengers and takes a total of 35-40 minutes per trip.
If you want to explore the lake towns for a few days, you know that day trips are possible, but there is a tax to pay. However, if you happen to be in San Pedro, San Marcos or San Juan, because this is here!
The lesser-known towns of Santa Cruz, Santa Catarina Palopo, Jabalito, Santiago Atitla, Tsununa, and more have some of the best hotels in the area, but they’re really for rest and relaxation.

Everyone raves about La Casa del Mundo and it’s easy to see why. With an impeccable location overlooking Lake Atitlan and three volcanoes, the view doesn’t get much better.
Here you can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub (Q300 extra), sauna, fine dining and family-style dining, free kayaks, hammocks for lounging, private pool, manicured gardens and warm and attentive staff. There is also a cool walking trail behind the hotel. this is one of our favorite Lake Atitlan hikes.
Each room is lovingly decorated with textiles and handicrafts from all over Guatemala. Depending on your budget, you can choose a standard, suite or deluxe suite.
Fun fact! 🐠 La Casa del Mundo is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving in Lake Atitlán, thanks to its submerged terrace and ladder (the water level has risen and fallen many times throughout history). 2. Villas B’alam Ya

If you’re heading to the tourist-friendly town of San Pedro La Laguna, you can’t miss Sababa Resort. The hotel is on the lakefront, right by the docks, in a great location with a great view of the lake and a quick 5 minute walk to “downtown” San Pedro.
Part boutique hotel, part hostel, Sababa Resort offers suite/dorm combinations for every budget and occasion. It has arguably one of the most beautiful outdoor pools, with swings and deck chairs integrated right into the water. Enjoy a bar, beach hammocks, private pool and sunrise yoga.
Sababa Resort was one of the first hotels on Lake Atitlan that caught our attention. We lived in a small house on the slopes of the San Pedro volcano for two months and regularly visited the Sababa restaurant/cafe for lava cake and fresh juice.
