Owners Peter and Patty Cook opened Pickering House Inn in 2018 to offer world-class hospitality that is also intimate, unpretentious and inviting. A two-year renovation of the iconic Pickering Estate and adjoining barn has maintained the historic charm of the property while adding fresh contemporary design and first-class guest facilities. Combine autumn leaves reflecting on the water with the charm of a gourmet resort town, and you have a place worth visiting (or taking a boat trip).

As you drive into Wolfeboro, you’ll see a sign that proudly proclaims “America’s First Resort.” The town was chartered by Governor Wentworth in 1759, and the fact that he built the mansion on Smith’s Pond, now Lake Wentworth, is the basis of the claim. (Hopefully he loved to swim and caught some trout while visiting his cabin.) Unfortunately, he missed the great restaurants and shops that had populated the town for hundreds of years.

I’ve always liked Wolfborough, it’s a town center where you can walk around. It’s just a couple of blocks from the public library to Harvest Market and Bradley’s Hardware, and steps from the Pickering House Inn to The Wolfeboro Inn with plenty of restaurants and shops in between.

The dining scene here, as in other cities, is a celebration of change. Many family-run restaurants have stood the test of time and are still popular today. Some change their name and family, but serve the same customers. Morrisey’s Porch is like Manchester’s puritanical Wolfborough version of the back room, serving comfort food such as grilled seafood, turkey dinner and haddock stew in cozy surroundings. Fried chicken and freshly boiled or stuffed lobster are on the menu all year round. The best deal might be adding a 1-pound lobster to any meal for just $14.99. There is also a separate area for serving ice cream stands.

Another contender for longevity is East of Suez, which has its roots in the Eisenhower administration. 1967 to be exact, but there is a signed photo of Ike in the hallway. The menu is a delicious mix of pan-Asian dishes served in the cozy restaurant and on the covered veranda. Unfortunately, the restaurant closes for the season after opening hours.

An old sentimental favourite, the Yum Yum store, painted bright blue and white inside and out, was sold to Kelly and Peter Kelly was hired to help run the store. The familiar gingerbread men remain available, along with a full 20-foot box of cupcakes, cookies and cream-filled doughnuts. You can also find several varieties of their own bread, including Anadam. The inviting terrace has a picnic table in front of the ice cream windows and a small patio in the back overlooking the lake for a quick snack.

There are plenty of breakfast places to stay right on the main street. Next door to Made on Earth, one of my favorite shops in town, is Lydia Cafe. They are known for their blueberry pancakes and No Name wrap made with refried beans, salsa, avocado and cream cheese. There’s a new eatery nearby called North Main Café, which offers a selection of pastries and sandwiches for breakfast all day, as well as made-to-order avocado toast. Down the street, the Downtown Grille serves a full breakfast, including a variety of Egg Benedict options. Enjoy good coffee in their spacious cafe or on the outdoor terrace with great views of the lake and Keith Park.

Owners sometimes want to retire, but closed restaurants are becoming business opportunities for the next generation of chefs.

La Boca bakers and chefs Lisa Rice and Steven Lopez opened La Boca in the former Strawberry Patch space, replacing Wolfe’s Den. They offer an adventurous menu that changes daily. If you’re lucky, you might find paella or Prince Edward Island mussels with a spicy sofrito broth or homemade pate. Entrees range from shrimp and grits to Provencal chicken and Thai red curry, all of which have a bold flavor that shows a love of global cuisine. For lunch, you can enjoy creative sandwiches made with your own bread, as well as homemade soups. During the off-season, the couple host several Passport dinners, each themed around food from a distant world. Chef Lisa recently won top honors at the Wolfborough Chef Competition held at the Wolfborough Inn.

Across the street is Nolan’s Brick Oven Bistro, which serves handmade thin-crust pizza in a lively atmosphere. There is a large bar, quite a lot of table seating and additional seating on the terrace to the left. On the right is Mckenzie’s Pub at Nolan’s with its own entrance, pub atmosphere and patio. Owner Caroline Nolan recently bought a cider press from a barn in South Wolfborough and has been running it.

Waterfront restaurants line both sides of downtown Main Street, including Wolfeboro Dockside and Dairy Bar and Wolfetrap Grill & Raw Bar in Back Bay.
