Paragliding is an indescribable experience. The thrill of running down the side of a mountain, the speed of the wind lifting you off the ground and gliding through the fresh mountain air of Interlaken is a truly unforgettable experience. And surprisingly easier and safer than you think!

Many adventure sports companies offer paragliding and paragliding. So what’s the difference and which one is right for you?

If you are a serious adrenaline junkie, flying might be for you. We couldn’t justify the price difference so we chose paragliding and found paragliding to be the right amount of fun. It was fun, but not scary.

There are several companies that offer paragliding in Interlaken, so you have a few options. Here are some popular paraglider companies.

Higher Ground: Himalayas Paragliding

We found that most of these companies offer flights at similar prices for similar flight times, so cost is not a factor in deciding which company to go with. We chose AlpinAir because they had great reviews and were recommended by Airbnb, and we were not disappointed.

As with most paragliding companies, the most popular flight takes place in Beitenberg and takes off from the center of Interlaken. Our flight with Alpine Air was said to be a premium flight. Flight time is between 10 and 20 minutes depending on wind speed and the total trip from data to landing takes about 75 minutes.

The flight we chose with Alpine Air was $180 per person, and other tour operators offered similar prices for the same flight hours. That might seem like a lot for 20 minutes of playtime, but we thought the whole experience was 100% worth it.

Alpine Air offers a few other flight options that cost more than the premium flight, such as the Sunset flight with a 20-30 minute longer flight time and the James Bond Grand to Chilthorne with a total of 30 flights. -40 minutes (side note: when we visited Schilthorn, we saw people doing this flight and it looked amazing!).

No, as a first time paraglider, you must fly in tandem. Your guide will help you set up your parachute, assist you with extraction, and assist you with extraction and landing. With Alpine Air, your guide will go-pro and take photos and video of the entire trip, which you can purchase at the end of your flight for an additional CHF 40.

You can’t bring anything with you on a flight, so pack lightly. The tour company will store a small bag, purse or briefcase during the flight and meet you when you land so you can keep your phone and wallet in a safe place. You can’t bring your camera with you on a flight, so this should be avoided as well. You also have to wear a helmet to fly, so take off your hat.

In this section, we’ll give you all the details about your paragliding experience in Interlaken so you know what to expect when planning your trip.

Our guide picked us up from a nearby hotel on Airbnb. They offer a long variety of pick-up points around Interlaken and Untersein, so where you stay can be an option. They put us in a van with 4 other people and 4 concerned guides and took us about 20 minutes to Beitenberg where we were to take off.

Fun fact: Switzerland has four official national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh, which means that Switzerland speaks different languages in different parts of the country. My guide was from eastern Switzerland and spoke German but no French, while Matt’s guide was from western Switzerland and spoke French but no German. He spoke in English!

When we got there, we took a 5-minute walk to a wide field at the top of the mountain and set up our umbrellas. Before you take off, you put on a helmet, and help hoist your parachute up the hill, making sure the cord is undamaged.

I was nervous the morning of the flight, and the nervous excitement continued to build as we stood on top of the mountain watching the other paragliders fly in front of us.

Before taking off, you and your guide will be in a parachute stand on the mountainside. Then, as directed by your guide, you descend the hill at full speed until your parachute lifts off. You might feel a push up and suddenly your feet don’t touch the ground! The first moments when you realize you are flying are exciting!

Once your feet are off the ground, the flight is very smooth and you can sit back in your seat. After recovering from the initial flight shock, you will be amazed by the aerial view of Interlaken and its green lakes. Although I was already very nervous, once during the flight my nerves calmed down and I immediately felt more comfortable. It’s hard to stay in awe when you have an incredible view to distract you.

During the flight, you can try some twists and turns. If you don’t want to flip, your guide will honor this option, but if you want a little adventure, give it a try. Your guide drives the wings by pulling on both sides of the parachute.

Your flight will land in a large square in the center of Interlaken. Landing can be a little rough as your feet touch the ground and you skid for a moment.

Matt landed in front of me and looked down at me. After landing, we were all smiles as we exchanged flight stories and marveled at the unforgettable flying experience. We both agreed it was scarier than we expected and would do it again in a heartbeat!
