RAM was founded in 1948 as the forerunner of the University of Arkansas Women’s Association. In 1951, the United Artists of Fort Smith began holding art shows and classes at various locations around Fort Smith. In 1960, a site was purchased for an art center, and in 1968, the Fort Smith Center for the Arts was established. Mali Art Center has provided a valuable service to local and regional artists by offering space to its artists for five decades.
The opening of the new museum, located near downtown Fort Smith at 1601 Rogers Ave., was a major milestone for the organization. Arvest Bank made the expansion possible by donating the 16,000-square-foot building to the Art Center in January 2009 after purchasing Superior Federal Bank for $211 million in 2003. The art center was completely rebranded and opened in January. Opened in 2013 as the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, it fully meets the standards of the American Alliance of Museums.
RAM has won the prestigious Preservation Through Rehabilitation Award from the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas (2013), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Gulf States Region Award (2014), and the Gold Award from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). The newly renovated museum was designed by nationally recognized architect Polk Stanley Wilcox William J. Known for such works as the Clinton Presidential Library, the Heifer International Headquarters and the Arkansas Research Institute (ASI) in Little Rock.
