This time we hit 30 cities and six rural areas using Samsung Galaxy S22+ smartphones to see how AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon stand. T-Mobile won 18 of our 30 cities, Verizon won eight and AT&T won four.

Just look at the speed, and the difference is overwhelming. AT&T’s net advantage is in areas with more reliable networks than T-Mobile. T-Mobile is the fastest in 19 cities, Verizon in nine and AT&T in two.

T-Mobile is also doing better in rural areas, though it’s held back because it still has more dead rural data outside of the Northeast than the other two carriers.

Mobile Internet is the Internet, now more than ever, as more people work from home and almost anywhere. Of course, you need a 5G phone to reach this high speed. T-Mobile and Verizon will both get faster speeds nationwide this year as they upgrade their networks to 5G. But AT&T’s speed drops because it adds less capacity as data needs increase.

At some of our stations we were able to check if our phones were showing 4G or 5G and the type of 5G. T-Mobile has demonstrated the best 5G coverage — and the best 5G quality — in both urban and rural areas.

On the plus side, 5G is relatively more functional and intuitive than 4G, with rural T-Mobile showing “5G UC” 43% of the time, compared to 9% for Verizon’s 5G UW and 2% for AT&T 5G+. The same is true in cities. In the 19 cities where we felt we were getting enough data, we got premium T-Mobile 5G UC 78% of the time, compared to Verizon’s 5G UW 20% and AT&T 5G+ 7% of the time. That’s all because T-Mobile got the nod to build its own network on Sprint’s network, while Verizon and AT&T had to wait for the next auction. Verizon and AT&T are racing to catch up, and they probably can’t do it right — not yet.

The secret to the success of T-Mobile 5G is the medium, called “ultracapacity”. Calculating the performance of a wireless network can be simple: use more radios and more information and you will have more performance.

We’ve seen a lot of Verizon’s UW icon around the country and below AT&T’s 5G+. Both icons can mean mid-range or high-end. AT&T had large properties in Detroit, Texas, and South Florida. But both AT&T and Verizon currently use broadband compared to T-Mobile. While T-Mobile uses 110 MHz, AT&T typically uses 40 MHz and Verizon uses 60 MHz.
