The Maui Surfer Girls made the whole experience very enjoyable for me. The waves on the Maui side where they teach (Olowalu Beach near Lahaina) are nice and small, the view of the green mountains as the waves come in is beautiful and I had plenty of room to study.

To my surprise, I rode two through my two hour lesson, standing next to my second wave. I love that these lessons offer a non-competitive, female-friendly environment, and the surf camps they offer make it easy to meet other female surfers! Try surfing lessons in Maui, it’s great!

It was my first trip to the island and I was surprised how easy it was to make friends on board. You have several options for booking such a trip, but I recommend a small boat. I saw some that seemed to have hundreds of people, while Ali Nui had 60 people at most (only 24 when I visited last Monday). The food was excellent, the wine and beer flowed freely, including pick up and drop off from my hotel.

Honestly, I was surprised at how easy and pleasant it is to meet people in Hawaii, whether it’s locals or other tourists. Don’t be afraid of solo travel here, embrace it and enjoy the adventure!
