Ten years ago, when my husband and I were looking at vacation homes in the Hamptons, we considered a place in Montauk, but decided it was too far from civilization. It seems we were wrong. Although nicknamed “The End” due to its location on the easternmost tip of Long Island (about 120 miles from New York), this quaint town is teeming with restaurants, shops, hotels and visitors – especially in the summer season. .

Shop for a $3,000 Chanel handbag, but you can find souvenir T-shirt shops nearby. The craft cocktail lounge is just down the street from the shabby bar frequented by working fishermen. And of course, there are plenty of hotels to cater to the crowds that come to Montauk these days, from chic surfers to yoga enthusiasts and families.

My husband and I ended up buying a house in the next town over, and we appreciate being close enough to Montauk to eat at the hotel restaurant, enjoy cocktails on the beach, and even stay the night. Here is my list of the best hotels in Montauk.

Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, Montauk (ny)

Pros: The hotel has lower prices than most hotels in the area, more open spaces and a beautiful beach.

Cons: Some areas are a bit dated and there is no restaurant on site. There are also not many restaurants within driving distance.

Nestled between two state parks on a wide stretch of beach, Driftwood on the Ocean is a delightfully affordable find. Technically, the hotel is on the border of Amagansett, but I can attest that it is spiritually more connected to Montauk.

The condo property looks sterile at first glance – like something you’d rather see on the coast of Florida, with decor that can be hit or miss. Some rooms have been renovated with bright blue and white seaside decor, while others are early 1980s renovations. Many of the rooms have a kitchen or a terrace with sea views.

But you don’t come here to stay inside. Go for a swim in the outdoor pool. Play a game on the tennis courts. Compete in an exciting game of shuffleboard. You can prepare local seafood on the grill. Walk to Hither Hills State Park. And don’t miss the star of the show: the wide beach, which is often happily deserted even in the height of summer.

Pros: One of Montauk’s most affordable hotels, it comes with free perks like s’mores kits. It is also suitable for dogs.

Cons: The rooms are on the small side and there is no restaurant. Some guests complain that the Wi-Fi can be spotty.

A few years ago, my family and I were renting a house, so we decided to take a weekend stay in Montauk. We chose the Haven, a modestly priced motel from the 1970s that has been updated in modest Scandinavian style. Our daughter (she was a toddler at the time) loved hanging on the artist’s chair in the garden and floating on the big inflatable swan in the swimming pool.

Marram Montauk — Hotel Review

There are many hotels in Montauk that focus too much on the cool pool scene, but Haven appeals to families and couples who don’t mind a 5-year-old splashing in the water next to them. Indeed, Haven celebrates the simple joys of life, like roasting carrots over a fire pit. The hotel even gives guests a free s’mores kit.

The haven is located in the Montauk Harbor area, a quiet neighborhood where fishing boats bring in their daily catch. Two of my favorite restaurants in the Hamptons are right around the corner: Salivar’s Clam & Chowder House (great sushi) and Swallow East (eclectic small plates). There is a small bay beach across the street where the hotel can set up a free umbrella and blanket for you for the day.

Pros: The program is first class and the hotel doesn’t measure the price – it’s still affordable luxury even during the high season.

One of my favorite Montauk memories was celebrating a good friend’s 40th birthday at the Backyard Restaurant on Solé East. It’s no surprise that her husband chose this location for the milestone birthday: The restaurant is set in the middle of 2.5 acres of landscaped grounds, complete with outdoor seating, twinkling lights in hanging from the trees, hammocks and a fire pit

The restaurant is one of the many things that make Solé East so special. The building itself is beautiful: a distinctive Tudor building overlooking Fort Pond. There are 60 uniquely designed rooms and seven garden cottage suites; each has luxurious touches such as 300-thread count Italian linen.

The property has a large heated pool surrounded by St. Tropez, where guests can relax and listen to live music and DJs by the pool. Want to go to the ocean? The beach is just a five-minute walk or three-minute bike ride away, and the hotel has a fleet of cruises you can hire to take you there.

The hotel also has a sister beach, Solé East Beach, if you prefer to stay by the sea. Guests at Solé East Beach have access to all the amenities of the Solé East Resort, although not otherwise.

Montauk Beach House combines the best of all worlds – it’s one block from the surf beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and just steps from Montauk’s shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Sophisticated design and a social atmosphere add to the appeal.

Best Places To Stay In Montauk For Design Lovers

With antique furniture, bathtubs and high ceilings, the rooms feel like you’re living in the beach house of your dreams. Montauk Beach House also offers sustainable blankets, towels and apparel from Farm to Home, which sources its fresh, organic designs in India.

The public spaces are also impressive. The lobby is full of great artwork and will host cultural events throughout the summer including digital NFT exhibitions, interactive light installations, film screenings.

And more. Actress Naomi Watts has set up a poolside center for her ONDA Beauty brand (specialising in natural, clean and non-toxic products). And worse, the hotel also has a fleet of BMWs that guests can rent. Don’t miss: The hotel’s weekly Friday Sunset Session with live music and cocktails under the sunset Montauk sky.

Pros: This seaside wellness hotel offers a very low-key approach to health and wellness with yoga and meditation, fine dining and surfing.

Montauk, The Development Boom And Entrenched Family Businesses

I wasn’t happy when I found out a few years ago that one of my favorite beach resorts in Montauk had turned into a spa. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new Marram is a new addition to the local boutique hotel scene with an easy, not-in-your-face approach to hospitality.

Although only five minutes from Montauk’s main strip, Marram encourages guests to slow down. Instead of the party atmosphere that Montauk has become famous for, there is morning yoga, sunrise meditation, and evening pranayama (breathing) led by local and visiting yogis. There are guided and self-guided cliff walks at Shadmoor State Park. The hotel also has a global outlook and a South American counter service cafe, Mostrador, led by two chefs from Uruguay.

The property itself is inspired by the surrounding landscape. It is named after the wild grass that grows on the dunes around the property. With its unfinished white oak walls, hand-hewn cedar exterior and mahogany walkways, Marram’s architecture and design evokes the natural beauty of the Atlantic coast. Fun fact: In front of the hotel is a famous surf break called The Terrace, so don’t miss riding the waves with Marram’s top class instructors.

Pros: One of the few beachfront locations in Montauk within walking distance to shops and restaurants in town.

Hero Beach Club

At Hero Beach Club you will find a wonderful mix of tranquility and tradition, all against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel’s nostalgic nod to Montauk culture (artists, fishermen, surfers) and the outdoors is rooted in its original 1950s architecture, which has been modernized with a new modern design and modern amenities such as bicycles and snowboards .

One of the things about Hero Beach Club is that the welcoming atmosphere is holistically enhanced by the surrounding Peconic Dunes Land Trust (which means
