Best Food In Amarillo – For a long time, many travelers mistakenly saw Amarillo as the halfway point between North Texas and the Rockies. Drivers stop for the night, eat at a chain restaurant, then leave in the morning with old-fashioned sausage crackers for breakfast. However, that was my experience – until recently. This summer my wife and I went to Amarillo where we met up with some old friends, Andy and his wife Brooke. Together, they helped Aubrey and I discover Amarillo’s amazing culinary scene—one full of flavor.
When Andy and Brooke suggested pizza and beer for our first night, I expected the usual suspects to be found in most cities. Instead, we came to the trendy pizzeria 575.

But this is not unusual. It’s still Amarillo and we know it’s all steak and potatoes in the pan, right?
The next night we went to “Punjabi Atifa”. When we got to the small building right at the intersection I wasn’t expecting much, but Andy and Brooke had picked out a good spot for me the night before so I was optimistic. Guests can take their food through the drive-thru or they can order outside the window and eat in the covered patio. We decided to choose the roof. The roof was amazingly modern and completely covered on all sides. Don’t worry if you want to eat there in the winter, the patio is equipped with enough patio heaters to keep you cozy. We were seated at our table and soon the dinner was ready. Per the chef’s suggestion, I went with the Nakh-Ra Naan and Aubrey had his most popular dish, Butter Chicken. I can’t say I’ve ever eaten a dish with such a deep flavor. The steak was cooked so well that it melts in your mouth. The open naan at the bottom of the dish soaked up all the flavors of the umami meat, pickled onions and yogurt on top. Of course, I had to buy a piece of Aubrey’s butter chicken. It was very surprising. I’ve eaten a lot of chicken in my life, but I’ve never had it like this. The tender chicken soaked up all the buttery, creamy and spicy sauce, so every bite was bursting with flavor. There is no doubt that this Punjabi affair will be our go-to place every time we visit Amarillo from now on.

The rest of our kitchen tour convinced me to completely reconsider everything Amarillo has to offer but the ridiculously clean scene. The next afternoon, Andy showed us around Yale City Street Food, a chef-owned restaurant inspired by street food from around the world. Undeterred, I tucked into the pork dish, its soft, pillowy base topped with shredded pork and melted cheese, along with red onion, green onion, and a hint of cilantro. Brooke went for the Eggs Benedict, with a poached egg that looked ready to explode and a tortilla instead of an English muffin, which she shared with Andy, who got the batter (with a bright orange sauce that was magical). .
Whether it’s a day of hiking in the Texas backcountry, friendly staff, or premium ingredients—or a combination of all of them—our choice for dinner that night in Bangkok Tokyo turned out to be truly delicious Asian cuisine. After appetizers of salty edamame and both crispy and velvety cream cheese wontons, we shared a feast on chicken pad ke mao, with shredded carrots and crispy bamboo shoots and peanuts; Authentic Pad Thai with Salted Green Onions; green rice with bright green broccoli and juicy shrimp with a fried egg; A delicious pineapple curry with red and green chillies and a signature curry; and soft shell tempura with sesame sauce.
Looking back, I wonder what the staff would have thought of our four adventurous days with little more than a few points between us stretching our pins to each other. We were very hungry and the food was very tasty, food took precedence over talking.
